Just over half of my time as the president of the Southern Nevada Dental Hygienists’ Association has passed. It is time, then, to take a look at what we’ve accomplished, and what I still would like to accomplish before my tenure is complete.
In September, SNDHA initiated an annual continuing education event that will be held each year on the Saturday following Labor Day. This annual event will raise funds expressly for the purpose of funding community outreach projects. This year, our very first effort raised over $2600!
And speaking of community outreach, the accomplishment closest to my heart that comes to mind is the approval by the NSBDE of Teen Scene Saturdays, a new community outreach project for hygienists at The Huntridge Teen Clinic. One Saturday each month, beginning February 11th, volunteer hygienists from our community will meet at The Huntridge Teen Clinic to induct homeless teens into the dental program there. All hygienists providing hands on hygiene care to the teens at Teen Scene Saturdays will be required to obtain a public health dental hygiene endorsement (PHDHE), but there will also be ways hygienists without the endorsement can volunteer as well. Three hygienists have already received their PHDHEs for the program, enough to get started, but we need more. So, please contact me if you would like to apply for a PHDHE, and stay tuned to find out when subsequent Teen Scene Saturdays are being held. This is going to be great!
The SNDHA bylaws committee met in June 2011 and have submitted revisions for approval from the membership. During the business portion of the September monthly dinner meeting, the revisions will be voted upon for approval. Click here to download the revised draft of the bylaws.
