Legislative Update - January 2012 |
|
Happy 2012!
I was recently awarded the Nevada Dental Hygienists’ Association ‘Hygienist of the Year’ and wanted to start off by extending a sincere thank you to those who nominated and voted for me to receive this award. There are not enough words to express how honored I am. My involvement in our professional association has honestly been the greatest part of my 17 year career as a dental hygienist. While I do love patient care and my clinical career, ADHA has provided me a foundation of skills that I can use in all areas of my life. From professional development, leadership, travel and speaking opportunities, cutting edge continuing education to a network of friends/peers across the country. I am honored to participate and contribute to make our profession the best that it can be and to protect and grow our profession for the future! Thanks again for the tremendous award! Lancette VanGuilder, RDH
One huge thing that the NDHA wants you to get out of this legislative update is to share in our excitement for the upcoming 18 months that includes elections and the 2013 Legislative Session. The NDHA plans to act on what we heard from YOU and the NDHA survey results. Some of the topics that we plan to spend some time on are: protecting the dental hygiene public health endorsement, the dental hygiene committee of the NSBDE, registration for dental assistants, limited prescriptive authority, collaborative practice agreements and alternative practitioners. The NDHA board of trustees has approved a legislative agenda for the next 18 months that is supported by the NDHA survey results and NDHA policy statements. The NDHA plans to work with the Governor’s office in developing a subcommittee to improve communication between dental entities and lobbyists. We are also looking forward to developing a way to work with the Nevada Dental Association on topics that we can share some common ground. The NDHA is fortunate to have our lobbyist, Neena Laxalt, who has charged us with developing relationships with key partners for the next legislative session. She is the one who has suggested and reinforced the need for dental hygienists to be at the table when healthcare discussions are taking place. Neena understands the value of the dental hygienist as the primary preventive oral healthcare professional and has great ideas on how to communicate our message to the right people. We are lucky to have her as a valuable resource! On a fun note, the NDHA hopes to also help in the celebration of the milestone of 150 YEARS for our great state of Nevada!

President's Message - December 2011 |
|
Dear Fellow Hygienists,
I know you haven’t heard from us in a while, but, we’re still here working for you. We had our House of Delegates in October and I want to personally thank the Northern Nevada Dental Hygienists’ Association for doing such a fantastic job organizing our event. We hold our house in Reno every October and would welcome any members that would be interested in participating in this event. We are always on the lookout for delegates. It’s a great weekend and an opportunity to receive some continuing education and give back to your association, it’s members, and your colleagues.
We have an exciting year ahead as we look to advance the scope and awareness of dental hygiene here in Nevada and in the United States. Visit the ADHA website for all of the updates regarding practitioners in alternative practice and the new Minnesota programs for the Mid Level Dental Therapists at the University of Minnesota and the Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis.
Here at home I want to congratulate Future Smiles on their new clinic at the Clark High School Campus. Also, Huntridge Teen Clinic will be working on a new program to provide hygiene and dental services for homeless teens. Anytime you want to volunteer, you can get the latest information at our component meetings in northern and southern Nevada, look for updates on our website, or just contact me or our executive director. We’re always eager to help you help others! I have always been proud of how concerned dental hygienists are with increasing access to care for our under and unserved patients.
As we end another year I want to say thank you to all of the hygienists on our board at the state and component levels. I know how busy everyone is and I value the time you give to all of us. I also want to thank all of our members who make it possible for us to have an association. Without your contribution we simply could not afford to exist.
I know we are not out of the woods and people are still struggling financially, but the economy is starting to move and we will be back in the clear again soon. The greatest place to have someone listen and get support is at your association meetings and events. No one understands what it is like to be a hygienist except another hygienist. Please don’t practice dental hygiene in isolation.
Happy Holidays and Warm Wishes for a Joyous and Prosperous New Year!

Heather M. Rogers
NDHA President
